“Smashing the Patriarchy”

A few days ago, I was at a coffee shop with Pastor Don Lewis and Lee Bramlett for a meeting about fatherhood and the opportunities with Good Dads KC. We shared some of the amazing examples of God’s transforming power.

One incredible example was of a participant just released from prison after a sentence of more than forty-five years. During group share, he said a few days before, he was getting harassed in a park. In the past, he would have retaliated, however, he recalled the topic from a previous Good Dad’s KC meeting and decided to consider the long-term effects of retaliation.
Many years ago, he was in a similar situation, and he took someone’s life which resulted in his very long prison sentence. However, this time, he envisioned himself in handcuffs going back to prison and decided to walk away. Instead of retaliation, he chose to listen to the Holy Spirit and apply what he has been learning.

WOW!

Our conversation at the coffee shop went back and forth between stories and struggles. Four men and one teenager praying and planning for God to work through fatherhood. Each of us is passionate about resourcing fathers and affirming the God-given role of men.

And then….my eyes were drawn to the chalkboard….
Random people answered the question, “What is your favorite summer activity?” Fun activities such as camping, swimming, sleeping, and fishing were drawn in chalk….and then I noticed it….SMASHING THE PATRIARCHY…

Since when did “smashing the patriarchy” become a favorite summer activity?

My mind started racing…why…how…who…I drifted in and out of the conversation about men becoming better fathers, paying child support, investing in relationships, and stepping into their God-given role in the family.

Abusive patriarchy is never ok…God is angered when men abuse their role and use their authority to take advantage of people…FOR SURE!

However, it occurred to me that while we are working tirelessly to invest in fatherhood and men, there are some who would love to erase the responsibility given to men.

Statistics show that 90% of homeless and runaway youth come from fatherless homes AND 71% of high school dropouts are from fatherless homes AND 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes. The answer is not a fundamental shift in masculine and feminine roles, rather it is an intentional investment into supporting and enabling Biblical masculinity.

I am incredibly passionate to turn toward the 46% of children in Kansas City that are growing up in a home without a father. Imagine if we were able to multiply our efforts exponentially to support fatherhood so kids grow up with a humble and gracious dad, a strong and steady visionary, one who models sacrificial Christlike love, who serves…I believe God is calling us to support fatherhood in order to smash the statistics.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this program or would like to learn more about serving with Good Dads KC, please reach out to Pastor Don Lewis, Lee Bramlett, or myself: info@newlifekc.org. If you or someone you know is interested in supporting our efforts to smash the statistics, we thank you in advance for giving HERE.

Together, we can provide the children of Kansas City with a better childhood and a brighter future.

Let’s do this!
