Fades

Today, I took our three boys for haircuts—look good, feel good. Since I was overdue, I’ve been looking forward to walking out of the barbershop with a fresh cut all week. As you know, for a few days, everything feels clean and crisp. But it never lasts long. Within days, the hair grows, the fade fills back in, and before you know it, it’s time for another haircut.
Haircuts are a simple reminder of how temporary things can be. And this brings me to Jonah—a prophet who needed more than a few reminders from God that his faith needed some attention. Jonah’s story is a reminder of how easy it is to drift away from God, even after we’ve been set straight.

Jonah ran from God, literally heading in the opposite direction to Tarshish when God called him to preach to Nineveh. His rebellion didn’t go unnoticed. God sent a severe storm, and after Jonah was thrown overboard by terrified sailors, he learned his lesson the hard way—in the belly of a great fish. That was Jonah’s wake-up call, a reset moment. He got back on track, made the 900-mile journey to Nineveh, and delivered God’s message…even though it pained him deeply.

After preaching to Nineveh and seeing the city repent, Jonah wasn’t happy. In fact, he became angry with God for sparing them judgment. Jonah, the man who had experienced God’s mercy firsthand, suddenly forgot how much he needed that same mercy. Instead, he let his entitlement and frustration cloud his understanding of God’s grace.

Jonah’s story is like a fresh haircut, we can have moments where we feel sharp in our faith—where we’ve taken the right steps and seen God’s goodness in our lives. But if we’re not careful, it doesn’t take long for our hearts to grow out of shape, for entitlement to creep back in, and for us to forget just how much we need to rely on God’s mercy.

I sure hope to see you Sunday for a healthy reminder that God’s mercy is no match for selfish entitlement.
