Finish well, and pass the torch...

It seems a small army of flies has declared squatter's rights in my office. They’re fast, sneaky, and apparently on some kind of top-secret mission to test my patience. Every time I think I’ve caught one, three more show up like they were just waiting as backup.

Am I the only one who’s noticed them?

Some mornings I feel like I’ve been invaded and they're laughing at me….as I write this, one has landed on my nose….ahhhh. My swat attempts are heroic… but almost always too slow. I’ve actually paused to wonder what these flies are thinking and what they think of me….All I can say is they are part of God’s creation, and someday, I’m sure I'll learn God's purpose behind the fly.

But not today!

I searched and found out the average housefly only lives 15 to 30 days…these ones are smaller, so they likely have shorter lifespans. They spend their short time on earth growing, reproducing, and leaving their mark…literally. Which got me thinking: if these tiny creatures can make the most of their short lives (even if it’s mostly annoying me), how much more should we make the most of ours?

Life is short. Really short. Blink, and it’s gone. We may not be swatting flies, but we all have distractions that keep us from finishing well and passing on what really matters.

This Sunday, we kick off our 6-week series through Paul’s final letter of 2 Timothy, studying 2 Timothy 1:1-7. Paul, nearing the end of his life, writes to Timothy, his “son in the faith,” preparing to hand off responsibility for the gospel. He’s writing about finishing well and passing the torch to the next generation.

So, as I continue my fly-chasing adventures and enjoy these last 70-degree days before winter hits, I’m reminded that even the tiny, frustrating moments can teach us to live intentionally, invest in others, and leave a faith that lasts beyond our lifetime.

Can’t wait to see you Sunday as we explore what it means to finish well, pass the torch, and grow faith that lasts for generations.
