Trade offs...

This past week, Leigh-Ann and I were invited to a Sporting KC game with a close friend who was in from out of town.

We had a blast!

The atmosphere, the energy, the chants, the fact that our seats were incredible… it all made for a great night. (And yes, the food tasted better from those seats too. Don’t ask me why, but stadium food always feels like part of the experience.)

But here’s the thing: as great as the game was, that wasn’t really the best part. The real win was being with a close friend we don’t get to see often, catching up, laughing, and just enjoying life together. And to be honest, Leigh-Ann and I don’t get many evenings where we just get to hang out together at something like that, so that made it even better.

Sure, we had to fight construction traffic on the way home, which took us an extra half hour, but none of that really mattered, because it wasn’t just about watching 90 minutes of soccer. It was about investing in relationships that last beyond the stadium lights.

That’s a trade-off I’ll take every time. And in a way, that’s exactly where we’re headed in our new sermon series, “Living out our legacy.” Too many of us think life is about stacking up experiences, such as the trips we take, things we buy, or games we attend. But Scripture reminds us that legacy isn’t built by accumulating experiences; it’s built by making wise trade-offs. Choosing faithfulness when it would be easier to cut corners. Choosing courage when fear feels more comfortable. Choosing principle when convenience is calling our name.

This Sunday, we’ll begin at the very end of King David’s life in 1 Kings 2:1–4, where he gives his son Solomon some final, heartfelt advice. And here’s the challenge: don’t wait until the end to think about finishing well. Legacy isn’t something you cram for in the last chapter of your life; it’s something you live out daily, in every decision, one trade-off at a time.

So come ready to be encouraged, challenged, and maybe even stretched to think differently about the kind of story your life is writing.

I can’t wait to start this series with you on Sunday.

See you then,
Troy
