Bragging right and bigger mission...

This past weekend marked a historic event in the life of New Life CityChurch…our 5th Annual Kickball Tournament, also known as the Hunger Games for people who used to be athletic.

As expected, it was competitive. And by “competitive,” I mean teams were scouting talent like it was the MLB draft. There were diving catches, clutch kicks, questionable calls, and more trash talk than a family Uno night. It’s fair to say that we are a church that believes in grace… but we also like to win.

Maybe it’s the Kansas City in us. We just can’t help it, there’s something in the barbecue sauce. Fortunately, despite the intensity, no serious injuries were reported. Just a few bruised egos, some pulled muscles, and at least one guy who is now questioning all of his life choices every time he climbs stairs.

Now, I don’t want to use this email to brag about winning this year…I have all year for that ?. But far more important than kickball supremacy, is our mission to advance the Gospel to the end of the earth. This Sunday, we will study from Acts 16 where we will discover the Apostle Paul has a Spirit-filled moment of prayer that leads to a Spirit-led mission…a mission that doesn’t just impact a game but changes eternity.

Paul and Silas end up in Philippi (modern-day Europe) not because it made sense on paper, but because they followed God’s timing and power. Doors opened (some literal prison doors) and lives were transformed. The Gospel advanced, not through slick strategies or power plays, but through Spirit-led obedience.

As we look at our city of Kansas City, we recognize that the mission continues. But if we want to see real transformation, it won’t happen through hustle alone. It’ll happen when we trust God’s timing and lean into His power.

So yes, enjoy the kickball memories….especially if you won some games, but more importantly, let’s remember that the most important “win” this year is when someone hears the Gospel and says yes to Jesus.

I sure hope to see you this Sunday…we have two weeks left in our sermon series on missions and then we will begin a four-week sermon series that addresses our use of devices and all things digital entitled, “Unplugged: Reclaiming life the way its meant to be.” New Life has purchased 200 workbooks and access to an app and we will have these available starting this Sunday.

We are meeting in our NEWLY REMODELED SPACE AT 1717 McGee. Services are at 8:00, 9:15 (Full KidCity available), or 10:45 am (Full KidCity available), or you can watch the Livestream on YouTube (Like and Subscribe) or on our New Life website at 9:15 am.
