Is it old or is it vintage?
Leigh-Ann and I have been married long enough to know we don't always value the same things.
I am a little more nostalgic. I like to keep things. I still have my college football jersey, and only about a year ago did I finally throw away the T-shirt I wore under my pads for every single game. I keep books, old letters, and apparently clothing long enough for it to go out of style and then come back in style. I have shirts and pants in my closet that are probably 25 years old, but I'd rather call them “vintage.”
Leigh-Ann approaches life a little differently.
She likes things simple, clean, and uncluttered. When the kids brought home artwork from kindergarten, I saw a priceless family keepsake. Leigh-Ann saw something that could be photographed and then immediately recycled. She has discovered that a digital picture takes up significantly less space than a macaroni-covered piece of construction paper.
I have also learned that when I leave town, there is a reasonable chance something I own will quietly disappear. The problem is that I usually do not discover it until six months later when I am standing in the garage saying, “I know I had one of those.” Apparently, if I did not know it was missing for six months, Leigh-Ann considers that evidence that I never really needed it.
The truth is that we simply assign different value to certain things.
This Sunday, we are going to see Jesus challenge the way we determine what is valuable. In Luke 6:12–26, Jesus calls ordinary people to follow Him and then begins teaching them the values of His kingdom. He describes people as “blessed” whom the world would never consider successful, and He warns people who appear to have everything going their way. Jesus turns the world’s scoreboard upside down.
As followers of Jesus, we are not called to let our culture determine what matters most. We are called to become kingdom-shaped rather than culture-shaped.
This Sunday we will continue our Everyday Disciples series and ask what it looks like for kingdom-shaped disciples to depend on God, see people differently, and measure life differently.
I sure hope to see you on Sunday at 8:00, 9:15 (Full KidCity available), or 10:45 am (Full KidCity available)…OR a service in Spanish at 1:00 pm. Otherwise, you can watch the Livestream on YouTube (Like and subscribe) or on our New Life website at 9:15 am. Also, we would LOVE for you to follow us on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
Enjoy this great weather, now to find my quarter zip.
