Go hard or go home...

On Wednesday, Leigh-Ann and I took the boys to watch the Mizzou vs. Alabama basketball game, and let me tell you…it was an experience. Thanks to a really good coach, we had some really good seats. And when I say “really good,” I mean close enough to hear the players calling out screens and to see the frustration on Alabama’s faces as Mizzou took control of the game from the start.

Now, here’s the thing, we were rooting for Alabama, but even though the Tide got rolled over, we had an absolute blast. The game was intense, fast-paced, and full of impressive plays. But one of the most fascinating parts wasn’t just what was happening on the court…it was where we were sitting.

We were surrounded by the player’s parents, and these weren’t just casual fans…they were fully invested. You could see it in the way they watched every possession with intensity, the way they analyzed every decision on the floor. These parents had poured years into their kids…early morning practices, disciplined nutrition, skill development, and endless encouragement. They had trained them not only in skills and athleticism, but also in the IQ of the game….how to read defenses, make quick decisions, and handle pressure. And now, they were watching the results of that investment play out on a national stage.

Meanwhile, the student section was out of control. I’m talking loud, relentless, and absolutely brutal to the opposing team. Those students weren’t just cheering; they were on a mission to change the game. And judging by some of the turnovers, it might have worked.

As I sat there, taking it all in, I couldn’t help but think about how Paul told Timothy to watch out for ungodly teachers and traps and instead to train for godliness.

These athletes didn’t reach this level by accident. Sure, they had natural talent, but it was their training that shaped them into the players they had become. And the same is true in our spiritual lives. Godliness doesn’t just happen. It requires commitment, discipline, and perseverance…just like an athlete training for the big game.

This week, we’ll be diving into 1 Timothy 4:1-10 to talk about what it looks like to stay devoted to godliness, even in an ungodly world. If you’ve ever felt like culture is pulling you in the wrong direction, if you’ve ever wondered how to stand firm in your faith, or if you just enjoy a good sports analogy…this one’s for you.
