Superhero...
This past week, I officially moved into my new office with boxes of books, a desk, some chairs, and a few stray cables that I’m pretty sure multiplied overnight. As I was unpacking, I came across a treasure I hadn’t noticed in a while: an original work of art from my daughter, Sophia. It was a carefully traced picture that boldly declared that I was her favorite superhero.
As I should be ?!
This masterpiece was something she worked on this past year…..JUST KIDDING….it’s from 10 or 15 years ago…and…it’s priceless.
At the time, she saw me as the one swooping in to save the day. The funny thing is, the roles could easily be reversed. These days, she’s the one wearing the cape.
Just this past Monday, she passed her instrument check ride as a pilot, one of the toughest tests in aviation. It’s a huge accomplishment. To me, it feels like only a few moments have passed between that little superhero drawing and this major milestone in her life. For her, it’s been years of learning, waiting, and pushing through challenges.
And that’s where this ties into our sermon this week. Habakkuk found himself looking at the chaos of his day. God was going to judge Israel, but He was going to use Babylon, a nation even more wicked than Israel itself, to do it. It didn’t make sense. How could God use something so evil to accomplish His plans? There were so many questions, so much uncertainty, so much waiting.
But here’s the truth: even when the world feels upside down, even when it looks like evil is winning, God is still at work. This week, as we look at Habakkuk 2:6–20, we’ll see five woes describing Babylon’s evil, and the reminder that similar evil exists today. Yet our call remains the same: to live by faith and to wait with hope in the middle of chaos.
Just like Sophia’s journey from superhero sketches to soaring through the clouds, the in-between may feel long and unclear, but God’s timing is always perfect, and He always finishes what He starts.
