Fore...

This past Saturday, my three boys and I grabbed a close friend and headed out for a round of golf. We decided to play a scramble on a par-nine course, and honestly, it was a blast!

Not because we’re great golfers…trust me, if the PGA is calling, they must have the wrong Campbells ?, but because we just had a great time together. Each of us had at least one moment of sheer brilliance where we felt like we could go pro…well, at least par was within reach. And the cheering that erupted for each little victory, ranging from a decent putt to a surprisingly straight drive, was loud enough to scare the birds and the deer.

Of course, those moments of glory were quickly followed by plenty of rough shots, sliced drives, and lost golf balls that reminded us humility still exists in spades. There were a few extra mulligans, a couple of “oops” moments, and more than one excuse. By the end of the round, we were tired and sore but in a great mood.

Here’s the thing about golf: a well-hit ball will go straight, but I’ve heard there’s a lot that goes into making that happen, such as the grip, the stance, the swing, and even the mental game. Miss one piece, and that ball veers into the rough, a sand trap, or even the roadway. It reminded me a lot of raising kids…there is so much that goes into preparing a child for the right trajectory in life, and every detail matters.

Psalm 127 compares children to arrows in the hands of a warrior. Just as a golfer carefully lines up a shot, a parent, grandparent, or caring adult must help prepare children with the right trajectory toward their God-given passions and purpose. There’s no shortcut, no instant mastery, just intentional guidance and a lot of grace.

This Sunday, in the third week of our Living Our Legacy series, we’ll explore the parenting phase of legacy. I’ll spend time contrasting the legacy David left through Absalom with the legacy Solomon built, and then we’ll dive into practical wisdom from Psalm 127 that helps us aim our “arrows” well.

Whether you are a parent, relative, or a mentor to the next generation, God has placed children in each of our lives for a reason, and we have a sacred responsibility.

I’m sure you relate with me that at times it feels like you’re in the rough…or in a bunker…or just trying to find the ball. But the joy comes from showing up and trusting God with the flight.

I hope you’ll join us this Sunday as we unpack this crucial phase of living a legacy. Services are at 8:00, 9:15 (Full KidCity available), or 10:45 am (Full KidCity available), or you can watch the Livestream on YouTube (Like and Subscribe) or on our New Life website at 9:15 am.
