Gone Fishing...

I would grab my fishing pole, jump on my bike, and ride about half a mile from our house down to the river. I usually wore an old pair of sneakers so I could wade into the water and cast from there.

Sometimes I used a red and white Dardevle, hoping to catch bass, walleye, or even a northern pike. Other times I put a worm on the hook, inflated it (key point), and added a heavy sinker to fish for carp or bullheads.

Honestly, I did not care much about what I caught. If something pulled on the other end of the line, I considered the day a success. Of course, some days I caught absolutely nothing…which is why I’m a pastor and not a professional fisherman. 

This Sunday we head back into Luke and we will start with Luke 5:1–11, where Peter understands the frustration of empty nets.

He had worked all night and caught nothing. Fishing was not a hobby for Peter. It was his livelihood. By morning he had pulled the boat to shore and started cleaning his nets. As far as Peter knew, the day was over.

Then Jesus stepped into his boat.

What happens next becomes much bigger than an incredible fishing story. Jesus meets Peter in an ordinary moment and begins changing the direction of his life. Peter learns to trust Jesus even when His instructions do not make sense. He sees the holiness of Jesus and begins seeing himself differently. Jesus gives him a purpose greater than making a living, and Peter begins learning what it means to become a disciple.

That is why we are calling this next section of Luke, Everyday Disciples.

Most of our lives happen in ordinary moments. Yet those are often the very places where Jesus meets us and calls us to follow Him.
