Growth and Vision
God is at work in Kansas City rebuilding lives and uniting families. We have experienced a lot of growth in the last few years which has led us to implement some necessary changes. We are so thankful and excited to see how God continues to grow Good Dads KC (GDKC) and we are pleased to share with you some of the coming changes in the organization.
A New Name: Fatherhood Foundations
GDKC is in the process of changing our name and it will go into effect in the new year (dependent on the speed of our 501(c)(3) being processed). Good Dads was founded in Springfield, MO when some business leaders recognized the “impact of father absence on child well-being and came together for the purpose of supporting father engagement.” (GD Springfield website) Good Dads Kansas City branched out from Springfield and we have been working alongside them to reach fathers in our respective cities. Although we will have a different name, we will remain a Good Dads’ chapter, meaning that we will still use the same curriculum and work hand-in-hand with Good Dads Springfield.
Purpose and Vision
The reason we are changing our name is that as we move into our second year of GDKC, we realize that God is bringing growth and expansion more rapidly than we expected. If we continue as the same legal entity as GD Springfield, there are limitations on what classes we can teach, where the program can extend to, and our ability to meet the unique needs of our city and beyond.
This name change brings many new opportunities which we are excited to move towards. Long term, our vision is to see multigenerational transformation. We want to last more than 50 years. To do this, we need our own 501(c)(3). This will allow us to adjust our programs to meet our city's needs and allow Springfield to do the same.
First, we hope to begin trauma healing classes, and with the name change, we will be able to deliver these classes in the future. We see many benefits to including this in our program and here is a brief description of the program from our website:
“Trauma Healing, developed by The American Bible Society and the Trauma Healing Institute, is for everyone who has had any level of trauma, abuse, or neglect. The program focuses on caring for different types of trauma, based on the Word of God and providing the best words of comfort for those grieving. The questions of human suffering and strife are not easy answers. However, the core principles of Trauma Healing – connection, basic listening skills, participatory learning, and empathy – provide a helpful framework for addressing diverse topics and situations. Discussions are centered around compassion, curiosity, and grace.”
Second, we want to be free to teach and network with groups to help reduce financial instability. We desire to help men learn how to manage finances, learn financial literacy, and provide for their families.
While we already work in the state of Kansas, with this name change, we will be able to expand our reach in both Missouri and Kansas. Lastly, with our own 501c3, we are eligible for grants. As we grow, we need to be able to receive grants to help with the financial side as we continue on this trajectory.
Why “Fatherhood Foundations”? Our driving verse during this time has been Malachi 4:6, “And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.” We want to see the fatherhood of God reestablished in the hearts of men and women.
Summary
- Ultimately, we want to be open to where God leads and what He allows us to do.
- We want to emphasize that we are still tightly bound to the Springfield Good Dads group. We are not disassociating from them. In fact, we are currently helping to start a new program in Colombia, MO by training facilitators. We will remain a Good Dads’ chapter and our new name and legal status should open more doors as we follow God’s leading.
- We want you, our prayer and financial supporters, to know now about these changes so that you aren’t surprised by the rebranding when it rolls out. Thank you again for all you do and let us know if you have any questions!
